Services in North London
North London's mix of period terraces, semi-detached suburban housing and inter-war estates generates a broad range of construction projects.
Common Projects in North London
North London has a varied housing stock. Inner North London — Islington, Hackney borders, Camden, Haringey — is largely Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing, similar to the East and South London pattern. Outer North London — Barnet, Enfield, parts of Haringey — includes more inter-war semi-detached housing and post-war estates alongside Victorian stock.
Rear and wraparound extensions are common in Islington and Haringey, where narrow-plot Victorian terraces have rear gardens that can accommodate ground-floor extension. Loft conversions are popular throughout — many North London houses have unused roof space suitable for dormer or hip-to-gable conversion.
In outer Barnet and Enfield, semi-detached houses on wider plots allow for side extensions and first-floor additions that would not be possible on inner-London terraces. New build development is also a feature of North London, particularly on infill plots and in areas with more flexible planning policies.
Victorian Terraces (N1–N8)
Rear extensions, loft conversions, through-lounge reconfigurations and full refurbishments in inner North London's dense Victorian streets.
Semi-Detached (Barnet, Enfield)
Inter-war semis with side garages and wider plots. Common works: side extensions, garage conversions, first-floor additions, full refurbishments.
Wraparound Extensions
Where rear and side extensions are combined, wraparound extensions significantly increase ground-floor living space. Common in Islington and Holloway.
Basement Conversions
North London's larger Victorian properties — particularly in Camden and Islington — are candidates for basement and lower-ground-floor conversions.
Planning in North London
North London boroughs include Camden, Islington, Haringey, Barnet and Enfield, each with distinct planning policies. Camden and Islington have particularly active conservation area policies — large parts of both boroughs are designated conservation areas with restricted permitted development rights.
Islington is notable for its extensive Article 4 Directions, which in many areas remove permitted development rights for extensions that would otherwise not require planning permission. If you are in an Islington conservation area, check with the planning authority before assuming any work is permitted development.
Barnet and Enfield have more suburban character and generally more permissive permitted development regimes, though conservation areas and listed buildings do exist in both boroughs.
Planning disclaimer: Planning requirements vary by property and location. Always verify with the relevant North London local planning authority before commencing works. RCB can advise on construction matters but planning decisions rest with the local authority.
